Dr. Abbot and Dr. Plotnick performs many laparoscopic surgeries each year. Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive type of surgery in which very small incisions are made in the abdomen to insert a long, slender tool called a laparoscope. A light and a tiny camera are attached to the laparoscope and allow the surgeon to view pictures of the inside of the abdomen on a screen. Other tools can be inserted through these same incisions to perform different types of surgery.
The laparoscope can be used for diagnosis and treatment of numerous problems such as endometriosis, pelvic and abdominal adhesions, cysts, and ectopic pregnancies. Most tubal sterilizations are performed laparoscopically.
Hysterectomies are often done laparoscopically. There are many advantages to having a laparoscopic hysterectomy.
