If you have had problems with heavy or frequent menstrual bleeding, bleeding between periods or numerous unexplained miscarriages, your provider may suggest that you undergo a hysteroscopy. A hysteroscopy is a procedure where a hysteroscope is inserted through the cervix so the physician can look at the lining and contour of the uterus.
A hysteroscope is a very small telescope that slides through the cervix into the uterus. The cervix is numbed and then the scope in inserted. The uterine cavity is expanded with the use of saline or carbon dioxide so the doctor can get a clear view of the walls. The endometrium (lining of the uterus) is examined for irregularities. Fibroids or polyps and the shape of the uterus can be seen. The procedure is over in a few minutes and provides diagnostic information to help the physician plan your course of treatment.
